Computers

This year has been very exciting as sixth grade goes. I think that my biggest accomplishment was mastering the computers we were given. I can do many things on my computer. I can google for fun and at the same time I’m doing homework. I think that the computer program at my school really helps.

Favorite Memories

My favorite memorie from school was reading off information at our spring concert. I got to read in front of over 300 people! this was really fun because it was the first time I’ve ever done a speech that  big.

FUN

This last week we had our field day.  It was AMAZING. We did all sorts of fun activies including: tug of war, running races, and sack races. It was a BLAST. Every class participated and put forth great effort. We won our first two tug of wars and lost the second two. We even got to dump buckets of water on our teachers.

School Life

This has been a great year of laptops, concerts and fun. School is almost over and we got a ton of work done. I made two new friends: Brandon and Nikko. As i finish the year I’m going to holiday world with my band to celebrate the end of the year.

Creekside

Adventure

By:

Greg Huibregtse

On a very serene day I went fishing for some prodigious smallmouth bass. These creek bottom was so austere that my feet felt rigid from wading in such a palpable manner. We caught many fish but they were pervaded. Towards the middle of the day I noticed that the current abated. After this I also noticed that we caught less fish, but much larger ones. We fished from down stream which gave us a benefit because the fish can’t be spooked. Casting my lure very carefully I let it plunge into the water about three feet from some rapids. As I was reeling I felt the line have an increase in tension so I set the hook.

A very furtive fish was on the end of my line. The fish traversed the river in about a second and that’s when I knew this was going to be a good fight. I stepped back to get better footing but only to have an acute pain in the back of my heel. I looked back for a second and caught a glimpse at a sharp rock drawing sanguine liquid from my foot. I tried not to think about my wound and proceded with the fight.

The fish pulled so hard that I had to step with bad foot to stay were I was. Immediately I felt much languor and closing my eyes to remind myself that I was strong. I sat down on a nearby rock and quickly started reeling. The fish pulled so I pulled back. All of the birds around me started quite a clamor during my fight. I then looked up and saw a falcon examining my fish.

The fish started to swim diagonally toward me so I moved my rod to where it was headed. It turned around so I reset the drag I brought the fish in. the fish must have been a good two to two and a half feet long. My foot still hurt but just said, “no sacrifice, no reward.”

Recently I read the book, Trouble Don’t Last. here are the S.E.E. questions and my answers (S.tate E.xplain E.xample).

Comprehension Questions

Trouble Don’t Last By Greg Huibregtse

Answer each of the questions below by using S.E.E. format where it is appropriate. Give as much detail from the novel as you can.

  1. Briefly describe Samuel’s life with Master Hackler and his family?

Samuel is a slave of Mister Hackler. He was born into slavery and his mother was sold off. On page 2 Samuel drops a plate and Miss Catherine throws a fork at him. He also loses his dinner afterwards. This shows how badly he and the other slaves are treated.

  1. During their flight northward, Harrison tells Samuel to “sleep with his top eye open.” What did he mean by that.

Harrison told Samuel to sleep with his top eye open. Harrison meant to watch out tonight. He said this because he was going to run away with Samuel. He does this on page 14 and 15.

  1. Why did Harrison steal some of the Hackler’s belongings, such as Master Hackler’s boots, etc.?

As Harrison and Samuel were escaping Harrison stole some of his master’s belongings. He did this to have supplies for the trip ahead. Harrison sent Samuel to get a skillet and a knife on page 18

  1. What is the “River Jordan” and why is it important that Harrison finds it?

The River Jordan is a common spot for escaped slaves. It’s important because it marks the halfway mark to Canada. Harrison and Samuel find it on page 68.

  1. The River Man gives Samuel some advice on how to carry himself. What is the advice and how might it help Samuel?

The River man says to walk as if you have the right to. He also says to not run away if he were to get caught. This did help him on the docks at the end of the book. Samuel acted calm and went to freedom.

  1. Why is the gray yarn so important to Harrison?

The gray yarn is important because it is something Hannah (Samuel’s mother and Harrison’s daughter) made. It’s the last thing Hannah left before she was sold off.

  1. What does Samuel learn about his relationship with Harrison?

When Harrison was sick he started mumbling things. He said how Hannah was his daughter and how his wife was Belle. Since Hannah was Harrison’s daughter, that meant that Harrison was Samuel’s grandpa. Samuel figured this out shortly after the mumblings.

  1. Why do you think the Constable lets Harrison, Samuel, and Ordee Lee go?

The three slaves had no free papers. Instead Samuel gave The constable Ordee Lee’s paper with the three pieces of hair. I think the constable let them go because he thought the three hairs were given by their master to be free.

  1. Explain the title of the novel, Trouble Don’t Last.

There is a lot of meaning behind the title. I think it refers to the journey that Harrison and Samuel went through. After they leave on the boat there “Trouble Don’t Last” anymore

10. Did you enjoy Trouble Don’t Last? Tell ‘why’ or ‘why not’. What was your favorite/least favorite part of the book? Explain.

I liked the the book, but didn’t love it. I like the suspense because it made the book interesting in many different parts. I didn’t like the book because of the lack of action and fighting. There were only a few parts with action. The one that comes to my mind is where Hetty Scott is screaming for help as gunshots go off.

My whole poem is four quatrains. A quatrain is a four lined stanza. all of the ends of the lines rhyme with another end.

I will have to make an oral arguement later in the week on this essay. Here’s “Obesity in Schools”:

In the United States of America 400,000 children become overweight every year. Physical Education should be compulsory in schools because of the rise of obesity, the Psychological and physical health risks , and the advantages of being fit in school.
In the last two decades, the United States of America has had a large increase in overweight and obese students. About 1 in every 4.5 children is overweight. Fourteen percent of Indiana’s students are obese and thirteen percent are obese in the United States. These are statistics are too high. These young students will be the next adults. We don’t want an overweight country. We need to cut down the amount of overweight students.
People who are obese or overweight are at a higher risk of health problems and Psychological issues. It’s possible to get sleep apnea, Type two diabetes, and low Cholesterol if you are obese or overweight. An overweight person could have low self-concept, depression, and a potential for eating disorders. They may be normal issues but my point is that an overweight student is more at risk for these problems. Feeling good about yourself can make a difference for everyone. It can make you calmer and more relaxed.
There are many positives to being fit in school. Students have shown that if they are fit, then later in life, then they become much better people. This could mean more jobs. There would be more jobs because a fit employee is more likely to be healthy and an overweight employee is more likely to stay home instead of going to work. Scientists have have proven that students that regularly attend physical education classes do better in academics. This could also create an increase in jobs when the kids are older. Right now, the job market is Going down in flames. Many The benefits would be wonderful to the world’s economy. This means no more more money in the economy. Then the economy would slowly get back to where it was a few years ago.
I know that if schools stop physical education, there will be more time for academics, but as I have said before, it has been proven that fit students have actually shown that Physical education improves their academics. A recent study in 2006 shows that kids that exercise for 60 minutes a day had a 20 percent more chance to get an “A” in math or English. In order to improve schools across the country, I think that physical education should be mandatory in school.
There are no reasons that say Physical education should be taken out of school, but there are many facts that state physical education is a benefit to school systems. If students everywhere took physical education classes, it could improve the economy because smarter students get better jobs which many people don’t have and the obesity rate would go down in children anywhere from four to eighteen. The outcome would be prodigious if all schools made physical education compulsory. It could start small but make a big difference tomorrow. We will start a popular innovation that both students and teachers will like.

In class I am reading A Wrinkle in Time. we then had to write an Essay on a fighter that we thought fought the darkness.

Here it is.

In A Wrinkle in Time, Mrs. Whatsit tells the kids that some of the greatest fighters came from Earth. I think that Leonardo Da Vinci should be known as the best from Earth. He invented many things such as the parachute and helicopter. His inventions, discoveries, and reputation as one of the greatest thinkers of all time makes you wonder.

Leonardo Da Vinci lived in an era where he worked for many people and got enough money to invent and sketch different designs to fly (helicopter), make life easier, etc. then you think, how in the world did he come up with all of these great ideas before everyone else. His mind and notebooks left the rest of us with tons of ideas and machines that have helped shaped this society today. One of his inventions was the underwater diving suit, Or the scuba tank today.

Leonardo also made many discoveries including tides and how the human body works. He was the one who figured out that the moon’s gravity pulls the oceans towards itself, thus creating the tides. He also studied blood-circulation and how the eye works. Many of these discoveries help us understand modern day science and anatomy.

Leonardo also is thought about in every history, art, or science class. His thoughts were just some of the greatest ever made by a philosopher, artist, and scientist. In his time he was known as an artist. But now we recognize him as a role model to everyone. In your lifetime you will probably be sitting somewhere and think, this guy came up with some of the best artwork, theories, and inventions. Someone who was smarter than the average person today. That saying something because school back then wasn’t nearly as good as it is today.

I hope you have learned as much as I have in this essay and have come to realize how important Leonardo Da Vinci is and will always be. His ideas have improved our lifestyle and many other things like medicine and exploration on the Earth.
